Erste Bank – A Pioneer in Financing Renewable Energy Projects in Serbia

SEE ENERGY 2025 – Connect & Supply | October 28–29, 2025 | Master Center, Novi Sad

Erste Bank, a pioneer and one of the leaders in financing renewable energy (RE) projects in Serbia, will participate at the SEE ENERGY 2025 – Connect & Supply conference, which will once again bring together key representatives from industry, financial institutions, and the energy sector.
The focus of this year’s conference will be on financing models for energy efficiency and investments in green technologies, representing one of the key pillars of Serbia’s and the region’s energy transition.

A Decade of Investment in Green Energy

Since participating in the financing of Serbia’s first wind farm in 2015, Erste Bank has built a strong position in the large corporate client segment. For nearly a decade, the bank has been consistently dedicated to financing energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.
So far, more than 80 projects have been financed in these areas – including wind farms Kovačica, Krivača, Košava, Kula, Pupin, and Čibuk 2, as well as numerous solar power plants and biogas facilities.
Independently or in cooperation with other financial institutions, Erste Bank has invested over EUR 400 million in 800 MW of green energy, accounting for more than two-thirds of all newly built RE capacities in Serbia.

Supporting SMEs Through the SME Go Green Program

In 2025, Erste Bank Serbia secured a EUR 15 million credit line with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union, under the SME Go Green program.
These funds are intended for small and medium-sized enterprises in Serbia aiming to improve their operations by investing in energy- and resource-efficient technologies, enhancing sustainability and competitiveness in line with the EU Green Agenda.
Special focus is placed on agriculture and agribusiness, as well as women-led enterprises, promoting equal access to climate financing and strengthening women’s roles in sustainable practices and green technologies.

Green Transition as a Strategic Commitment

A responsible approach to financing is deeply embedded in Erste Bank’s strategy. As an ESG and CSR leader, the bank actively contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy efficiency, and using energy exclusively from renewable sources.
Its sustainable operations include reducing energy consumption, improving recycling rates, and promoting sustainable business practices among clients.

Financing Energy Efficiency – A Core Focus of SEE ENERGY 2025

During the SEE ENERGY 2025 Conference, Erste Bank, together with other financial institutions, will present how companies can access green financing solutions and implement projects without major upfront investments.
The discussion will explore ESCO models, available state subsidies, EU funding mechanisms, and investment structuring criteria, helping companies transition toward more efficient and sustainable operations.

Two Decades of Trust and Growth

Exactly 20 years ago, Erste Bank began operating in Serbia by acquiring Novosadska banka, the country’s first and oldest financial institution. Building on over 160 years of local banking tradition, Erste Bank has continued to evolve, modernize, and digitalize as a member of Erste Group, one of the leading financial institutions in Central and Eastern Europe.

Erste Bank and SEE ENERGY 2025 share a common goal – to encourage investments that drive Serbia’s and the region’s sustainable energy future.

BIOMETAN SEE ENERGY 2025

From Waste to Energy: How Biomethane Is Changing the Game

As the world rapidly seeks sustainable energy sources, biomethane stands out as one of the most promising solutions for decarbonizing industry and strengthening energy stability.
Produced by processing agricultural residues, food industry waste, and manure, biomethane simultaneously reduces CO₂ emissions and promotes the circular use of resources.

Its potential and role in the regional energy mix will be discussed during a panel session at the SEE ENERGY 2025 – Connect & Supply conference (October 28–29, 2025, Master Center, Novi Sad), which will bring together representatives of companies and institutions dedicated to the development of biomethane technologies.
One of the key participants will be Marko Radin, Sales Manager at BIOGEST®, who will share practical experience and present innovative solutions and technologies for biomethane production in the region.

Austrian Technology, Global Results

BIOGEST®, headquartered in Austria, is one of the leading international manufacturers of biogas and biomethane plants.
With more than 30 years of experience, presence in over 20 countries, and more than 200 successfully implemented projects, BIOGEST has developed and applied its proprietary PowerRing technology, known for its high efficiency and reliability.

Its integrated approach covers all phases — from project development and planning, through co-investment and turnkey construction, to the operation of its own plants under the BIOP (Own Plant Operations) model.

One of the company’s most renowned projects is located in the Fucino Valley in Italy, where over 75,000 tons of agricultural residues are processed annually, including poultry manure and vegetable processing waste such as fennel.
This innovative plant produces 500 Nm³ of biomethane per hour, enough to supply around 3,800 households per year with renewable energy.
In addition, the facility produces organic fertilizer for local agriculture and food-grade CO₂ as a valuable by-product.

Thanks to its contribution to sustainability, the Collarmele plant has been recognized internationally, ranking among the top three finalists in the “Net Zero Circular Solutions” category at the AD & Biogas Industry Awards 2025.

Circular Economy in Action

BIOGEST plants are designed as closed-loop systems — waste becomes a resource, greenhouse gas and nitrogen emissions are reduced, and local communities are strengthened through cooperation with farms and shorter transport chains.
The planned installation of photovoltaic systems will further contribute to energy self-sufficiency and operational efficiency.

Biomethane as a Pillar of the Energy Transition

The panel “Biomethane – Potential and Application in the Regional Energy Mix” at SEE ENERGY 2025 will showcase how biomethane can become a key element of the region’s energy transition.
Participants will present best practice examples, financing models, and technical solutions that are already transforming the energy landscape of Serbia and the Western Balkans.

Marko Radin from BIOGEST will share insights on the implementation of biomethane projects and the role of innovation in accelerating the shift toward sustainable energy sources.

Biomethane is no longer the energy of the future – it is the energy of today, demonstrating how knowledge, technology, and cooperation can build a more secure and greener economy.
